Covid-19 Vaccine and cosmetic procedures

What is filler?

The use of fillers is one of the popular aesthetic procedure in recent years and has ranked second most common procedure after botox. Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers have been shown to have an excellent safety profile while delivering significant results in facial rejuvenation with high patient satisfaction. HA is immunologically inert, and adverse reactions with HA filler, acute or late- onset, are considered rare.

What is the link between filler and covid-19 vaccination?

It has recently been reported that three patients with dermal fillers have had adverse reactions to the COVID-19 vaccine. In two of these cases localized facial swelling occurred after vaccination, and in one - lip angioedema two days after vaccination. Each of these cases was resolved after treatment with steroids and/or antihistamines. The vaccine triggered an immune system reaction that caused the inflammation in the filler area and this reaction is transient. The problems were not caused by an infection or an allergic reaction.

Should I avoid covid vaccination if I have filler done?

Absolutely not. You should be vaccinated as soon as possible irrespective of having dermal fillers. Having a history of dermal fillers should not bar someone from being vaccinated. The risks from acquiring and being infected with the COVID-19 virus far outweigh the risks from a reaction to one of the vaccines if the patient has a history of using dermal fillers.

Can I do dermal fillers after covid-19 vaccination?

The answer is yes. Becuase this reaction occurs very very rarely but for being on the safe side, filler procedure can be delayed for three weeks after covid-19 vaccination. We recommend this gap period because the maximum immune response to vaccination have been seenfor 2-3 weeks and all the reported cases of filler reactions occured within first 2-3 weeks following the covid 19 vaccination. Furthermore, it is argued that larger boluses of HA filler may contribute to nodule formation. Hence, as a precautionary measure, it is recommended to inject a smaller volume with every session of HA filler.

What is the general recommendation regarding gap period between getting filler and vaccination?

.As a rule of thumb its better to avoid dermal fillers two weeks before or after vaccinations

Does it matter what kind of filler I have?

We have very few case reports so its hard to say yes or no but standard and FDA approved fillers should have lower risk of reaction.

Does the covid vaccine react with botox?

There have been no instances of any reaction to botox. Botox is a neuromodulator not a dermal filler and these products feature different mechanism of action.

Can I do a elective cosmetic surgery after vaccination?

Yes. An elective cosmetic surgery procedure is not a contraindication to routine COVID vaccination. It is recommended that the date of Surgery is separated from the date of vaccination by at least one week. This separation is helpful to attribute symptoms such as fever or systemic symptoms to either the surgical procedure of vaccination. If an individual is acutely unwell following elective plastic surgery, the COVID vaccination should be delayed till the patient recovers fully

What should I do if I see a reaction in my fillers following covid-19 vaccination?

Make an appointment with your dermatologist. There is nothing to be worried about. Your dermatologist can manage this reaction easily.
